On July 24, 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary nationwide recall of several types of textured breast implants because users may develop a rare form of cancer. As of July 6, there have been 573 cases worldwide of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BAI-ALCL) and 33 patient deaths. Nearly 500 cases—or 84 percent—were caused by textured breast implants from Allergan.

About Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)
BIA-ALCL is a rare disease associated with breast implants. Common symptoms include pain in the breasts, lumps in the breast or armpit, and swelling.
In most cases, the cancer is found in the fluid and scar tissue near the implant. However, it can spread throughout the body, if not treated after symptoms appear.
Textured saline and silicone implants—used by both cosmetic and breast cancer reconstruction patients—has been the primary source of BIA-ALCL. On the other hand, there are no confirmed cases involving smooth implants.
BIA-ALCL can be treated with surgery to remove the implant and scar tissues. In some cases, treatment can include radiation or chemotherapy.
The FDA found that users with Allergan textured implants are six times more likely to acquire BIA-ALCL in comparison to other U.S. manufacturers. FDA-approved manufacturers include Mentor, Sientra, and Ideal.
